Padinago's trip to Canada in 2012

Day 11 - Tadoussac, Québec

After our breakfast we start our tour which the concierge advised us last night. We first drive to l'Anse-de-Roche just after Sacré-Coeur. There we take some pictures. We want to drive up the mountain but the roads are so bad that we decide not to.

Then we drive first to Rue des Pilotes and then to Les Escoumins (where we will take a ferry tomorrow) in order to see some whales and we are lucky, we see some mink whales.

We start talking to a couple from Montreal, the husband is also spotting whales and birds (his profession and hobby is ornithologist). They suggest we follow them with the car to a place which we do not understand because of that French-Canadian accent but it seems to be the place which was next on our list for today: Caye Bon-Désir.

It is closed for cars (too early in the season) so we leave our cars at the entrance and walk. The advantage is that we do not have to pay any fee.

Once we arrive at these beautiful rocks on the seaside we sit down on the rocks where there are just about four other persons also awaiting to see whales with their binoculars.

We have nice conversations with this couple and finally we see lots of Beluga's, some mink whales and once in a while a curious seal.

After a few hours we say goodbye to that couple as they leave for lunch but we stay a bit longer. It is such a nice weather and a beautiful view on the water. We do not see a lot more whales but get lots of mosquito's and about two hours later we leave and drive back to our little place in the dunes where we were the first day.

Again we open the trunk and sit in it and prepare our camera's for the whales. We see a small whale watching boat and zoom in. They see a humpback whale about 30m from their boat jumping out of the water and waving with his fins.

When the boat turns back (we suppose their time is up) we stay and wait for more whales. All the time we see a dorsal fin but do not know what it is. Then when another boat passes we see that it is still the humpback swimming around and wants to play but the people on the boat do not see him and drive on...

As the humpback is only playful when a boat passes and there are no boats around we decide to leave and drive back to the hotel. We have a shower and get ready for dinner, same as yesterday and it was again quite good.

Daytrip approx. 146 km
