Day 15 - Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP

Today we decide to listen to the storekeeper’s advice and leave early for Gunnison driving through the Grand Mesa National Forest.

This is a mountain range with a couple of hundreds of lakes (some very small) and there we are almost entirely alone. We see a lot of guinea pigs and enjoy their playfulness. The landscape is greener and a bit fresher with snow at some places.

Once we pass Grand Mesa we stop at the little town Gunnison to enjoy a late breakfast, very good but way too much…

We drive ahead to the Black Canyon. I have waited the entire trip to see this place! It is not famous at all with no tourists and just a few people but it is one of the most beautiful canyons I have ever seen. Very deep and rocks who are almost black and very rough. Above us we constantly see different raptors flying into the canyon.

On our way back to Grand Junction we stop for a walk at the Cimarron Morrow Point Dam. There we have a long talk with a man from Alabama… What a funny accent but very difficult to understand. After a while you get used to it, a bit later his family joins him and we stay a while to have a talk with them.

Daytrip approx. 357 km
